Paradise Lost

Did you know there are hundreds of websites featuring jokes about the Garden of Eden? (”Why Eve? Like Adam was going to buy his own fig leaves or ask for
directions?”) But the Garden was an unspeakable tragedy, not a joke. And at a magnitude that hit me fully only this week.
The Garden was many years ago (5772 years ago, according to the Hebrew calendar) and we’ve become cavalier about the whole shoddy affair. It’s ancient history. Sure, we’re all sinners, but we’re all better than average. So we make jokes. We’ve gotten flippant. It’s not so bad.
A song I sang at Girl Scout camp makes the story almost cute:
Lord he thought he’d make a man, took a little water, took a little sand
Put him in a garden fair, thought he’d be right happy there
round that tree old Satan slunk, at Miss Eve his eye he wunk
“Eve, these apples look mighty fine, just take one, the Lord won’t mind!”
so she took a pick and she took a pull, and soon she filled that fig leaf full.
Satan. He’s such a rascal, isn’t he?..more…
The Need For a Super-President Of The EU
www.theignorantfishermen.com
Once again the European Union is in crisis and people are expecting it to collapse.
We believe the Union is at a major crossroad in its history. The choice of path will determine if the EU will succeed or fail to achieve its goal of being a supra-national empire (see our book, The European Union and the Supra-Religion: Setting the Stage for the Final Act?).
Rather than seeing the present financial crisis as a problem, many in the EU see it as an opportunity to achieve that goal. Prior to that achievement, the EU must deal with three barriers:..more…
Jerusalem Mayor Slams Divided City Solution
www.washingtontimes.com
An Israeli-Palestinian peace deal that divides Jerusalem would be “worse than no deal,” the city’s mayor says.
“There’s one threat [to Jerusalem]. That’s, God forbid, pressure from the world to divide the city,” Nir Barkat said Tuesday. “That’s the biggest threat. It will never work, it’s a bad deal, and it’s worse than no deal.”
He spoke at a lunch briefing in Washington organized by the Israel Project.
Mr. Barkat’s comments came three days after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent a letter urging Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to restart peace talks.
Mr. Abbas, who wants East Jerusalem to be the capital of a Palestinian state, has demanded that Mr. Netanyahu freeze construction there as a precondition for joining talks. The Israeli premier has refused...more…
Greece On Brink Of Collapse
www.telegraph.co.uk
Europe’s financial crisis lurched into a perilous new phase as dire predictions emerged of a collapse in Greece’s economy, with a run on its banks bringing an inevitable end to its membership of the euro.
As leaders in Athens accepted the need for a new general election to end a national stalemate, the International Monetary Fund said Europe’s leaders should prepare for the possibility of a Greek departure from the single currency.
Christine Lagarde, head of the IMF, warned she was “technically prepared for anything” and said the utmost effort must be made to ensure any Greek exit was orderly. The effect was likely to be “quite messy” with risks to growth, trade and financial markets. “It is something that would be extremely expensive and would pose great risks but it is part of options that we must technically consider,” she said...more…

In shadow of Iranian nuclear program, the two militaries will also hold massive air defense drill in Israel at end of summer; joint search and rescue operations conducted here Tuesday.
The Israel Air Force is soon to send fighter jets to take part in joint military exercises in the US,Channel 2 reported on Tuesday night. The IAF has not trained in the US for several years, the report said.
The exercises, to be held in the coming months, will strengthen the relationship between the IAF and the US Air Force as they practice carrying out joint operations, according to the report.
